I have 10 Things To Tell You about me:

About page photo.jpg

1. I grew up in Oklahoma.

I come from a one-stoplight town and a yellow house that sat on 40 acres. We drove 20 miles to go to school in the closest “big” town on the interstate between Oklahoma City and Dallas, two hours in either direction to get to an airport.

2. But I’ve lived in Los Angeles for nearly 20 years.

The summer after I graduated from the University of Oklahoma, I packed everything I owned into an old refrigerator box and my brother strapped it to the back of his pickup truck. We drove through the night straight across the country and down Hollywood Boulevard to a small apartment and a new life. I got a job as a production assistant and worked my way up in reality tv for years before I married the first director I’d ever met.

3. We are parents to two kids, ages 11 & 9.

Motherhood has been harder and more redeeming than I could have ever expected. I love to document our life in pictures on Instagram, and our Sunday pancakes ritual is a personal favorite.

4. Sharing yourself on the internet is complicated.

I’ve been blogging, creating, working, and sharing on the internet for a long time now, and have seen both the good and the bad of this medium. Still, I can’t stop returning to the magic of access across the world, and how instant publishing has cracked open our society. Everything I share is personal in some way, but I want this space to be less about me and more about pointing all of us towards growth.

5. Because, man, have I changed in some big ways.

It has taken me a long time to slough off the fear of other people’s opinions. I’m still working on it. But in the last few years, a lot of things have gone through a transformation, including my faith, my politics, and my approach to relationships. It’s been an evolution of sorts, one that barrels on. I know I’ve changed, but it also feels like a returning. Like I’m getting closer to my truest self.

6. I’m still bossy.

But don’t worry if you’ve known me for a long time, because there are some things that just don’t change. I love to tell people what to do, it’s like my slightly unwelcome super power. If we are in conversation for five minutes, I will for sure tell you something you need to check out: a book, a podcast, a movie, a person. Thank goodness the internet lets me spew out my recommendations at regular intervals.

7. Also, Anxiety is a lifelong companion.

When I was a kid, I started pulling my hair out until there were bald spots on my head. Starting in elementary school, I had migraines and mouth sores, among other things. My coping mechanisms for raging anxiety have been varied, but when my youngest child was a toddler I sought professional help for the first time. Therapy changed my life, and in the last few years I have shouted these truths from the rooftop. I am a high-functioning, normal-looking person who struggled silently for most of my life. Of all the things I’ve written and spoken about publicly over the years, this one is probably the most important.

8. Dr Pepper courses through my veins like blood.

I’m working on it.

9. I believe Stephen King is the greatest living storyteller.

Listen, reading is the key to life. Without stories we wouldn’t be human. I read every single day, without fail, across genres. There isn’t another living writer that comes close to spinning a tale like Stephen King.

10. Other favorites: Pilates, fuchsia lipstick, hot wings, Instagram, and margaritas.

These are the first things to spring to mind, but there are so many other things to tell you….
