BONUS: How Influencers are making money off you. (A conversation with Jessica Turner)

This BONUS episode is for anyone who wants to understand how influencers are making money every time you swipe up, or if you want to learn how to make that money yourself.

Welcome to another BONUS episode of the 10 Things To Tell You podcast. This one is really quite a departure from the things I usually share in the space because I’m pulling the curtain back a little bit on one of the ways I make money online, and that is through affiliate sales, meaning that when I link out to something I love: books, clothes, those scanpans from the Favorite Things episode, most of the time those are affiliate links, which means that I will make a small commission if you click through and purchase something from the site I linked.

I have been using affiliate links since way back in my mommy blogger days, and I have tried VERY hard to make it transparent that I’m doing so and also to be really trustworthy with the things I link to, I am always genuinely sharing things that I already purchased myself or that I actually like, I do not just randomly link willy nilly to things hoping you’ll click.

The truth is, a LOT of people you follow online, especially if they have any kind of a platform, they are ALSO using affiliate links. This can be an important part of your income stream if you are someone who creates content online. And some people are extra smart and savvy about it, like my friend and guest today Jessica Turner, from the blog The Mom Creative

You might remember Jessica from Episode 54 earlier this year, that was a Best Books Lately episode. Jess and I have been friends for years now, and she is in the top 10 people I have learned from on how to run an online business well, and legally, and do it in smart and creative ways. I just think she’s so smart, but it’s not my opinion that matters here, her numbers don’t lie: Jessica makes a full second income with her online business, a majority of that through affiliate marketing, and so when she launched this new course called Affiliate Marketing for Influencers, about all the things she does in this part of her online business, I knew I wanted to talk to her about it.

Now, you do not have to be a person who works online to take something from this conversation. Jessica and I talk about influencer culture in general, we talk about how influencers are getting this right and when they’re not, and I wanted you to hear us talk that through because ALL of us are being influenced, we’re often being sold to, and it can be hard to understand exactly how that’s working, for both the influencers and for the followers, so that’s the major part of this episode.

We do also talk more about Jessica’s course Affiliate Marking for Influencers for those of you who might be interested in learning to do this better, especially as more people are shopping online right now AND as the holiday season approaches and you might be ramping up for content that includes affiliate links. My own disclosure is that I am an affiliate for Jessica’s course Affiliate Marketing for Influencers, so if you decide to purchase, it helps both of us.
