Ep 197: Modern Manners for Teens

Ep 197: Modern Manners for Teens

My guest Brooke Romney believes that the only thing harder than parenting a modern teen is being a modern teen. In this episode, Brooke and I talk about a few of the rules that stuck out to me from her guide 52 Modern Manners for Today's Teens. This was a conversation I didn't even know I needed to have, and I loved it.

Ep 161: My Husband Is Not My Best Friend

One of my core friendship philosophies is that my spouse is not my best friend.

When I talk about this, people raise their eyebrows. Some assume our marriage is in trouble or that we're ill matched. It has become so common in romantic relationship culture to claim that you're married to your best friend that anything else seems unhealthy.

Ep 128: 10 Tips for Hosting Houseguests

Ready to bust out the air mattresses?

This episode is FULL of practical, logistical, and emotional tips for hosting people in your home. I'm sharing everything from the 4 things that keep (most) guests happy, to the mindset shifts that will keep you from being overwhelmed or resentful.

Look, if there's one subject I can give many (many) words to, it's hosting houseguests. Since I moved to Los Angeles 20 years ago, I've hosted friends and family of all group sizes, from couch crashers in a tiny apartment to my entire extended family at our new home last month.

Our lovely lake house has also been a revolving door of guests over the years, where I've become an expert at managing meals, airport pickups, activities, and downtime for families and groups.  I know that having guests can be an absolute honor and also completely exhausting. I hope this episode gives you the tools to plan and the freedom from pressure the next time you're the host.

BONUS: Tremaines Wave Hello from ONE YEAR of the Pandemic

In March of 2020, just three weeks into the global pandemic bringing Los Angeles to a standstill, we recorded a family episode called Ep 59: Marry the Person You Want to Quarantine With (the Tremaines Wave Hello).

And now we're back....only it's been ONE YEAR of the pandemic and we still haven't returned to school or work full time. Our family (me, my husband Jeff, our 11 year old daughter Lucy, and our 9 year old son Finch) returned to the couch and the microphone to talk about the last year has looked like for us.

Ep 84: Where did we begin? (A relationship origin story with Jeff Tremaine)

This episode is for anyone curious to hear the other angle of an origin story.

It’s our wedding anniversary! This week, Jeff and I celebrate 13 years of marriage, and so I thought it would be fun to have him on the show to share HIS side of our relationship’s origins. This is something I’ve talked and written about for years, but (surprise!) he has a different take.

Ep 82: Create a family yearbook (10 Tips from Miss Freddy)

This episode will motivate you to create a family yearbook (or any other kind of photo book).

Miss Freddy is back!

Last year’s Ep 41: 10 Tips to organize your digital photos with professional photo organizer Miss Freddy was so popular that I couldn't wait to have Casey (aka Miss Freddy) back on the show for more ideas about what to do with all the photos we’re drowning in.

This time we’re focusing on family yearbooks, but Miss Freddy’s advice applies to any sort of digital photo book you want to create. She’s sharing the steps, the tools, and the mindset to create an album you’ll be so happy to have.

On roughly week 11 of the Los Angeles lockdown due to the coronavirus, I sat down with my husband Jeff and our two kids - ages 8 & 10 - for a lighthearted chat about all the movies, documentaries, and tv series we watched during quarantine since this season meant a LOT more screen time for our family than usual.

Ep 55: Living Abroad with Kids (10 Takeaways with Julie Stillwell)

This episode is for you if you've ever dreamed of living abroad with your family for a year.

I've been dying to share this conversation with my dear friend Julie. In 2018, Julie Stillwell and her husband Tom took their two young daughters to live in Amsterdam for one year. All four had lived in Los Angeles their whole lives, so this was a family adventure with a hundred takeaways.

We talk about the logistics of moving abroad and the emotions of both leaving and adjusting. We talk living without a car and sending their kids to the International School. We talk about style and food in Amsterdam versus the United States. We talk about why life seems simpler and slower in this part of Europe, and how temporary absence can actually deepen relationships.

Ep 48: Should we post our kids on social media? (A conversation with Nish Weiseth)

This episode is for you if you’ve ever second-guessed posting photos of your kids online.

Nish Weiseth - a friend I met through mommy blogging years ago - recently posted on Instagram that she was going to take a step back from posting her family online, because her kids are getting older and she started questioning her own motivations. I thought her take was really interesting, so I reached out and asked her to have a friend-to-friend conversation on this topic…publicly.

Ep 28: Motherhood through Adoption with Lindsay Lawler

This episode is for you if you or a loved one has ever struggled through the fertility process, or if you’re interested in the topic of adoption.

I am so happy to share this conversation with one of my dearest friends, Lindsay Lawler. Lindsay and I have been like sisters for nearly two decades, from our freshman college dorm to living together throughout our 20’s in Los Angeles. Still, the topic of fertility and motherhood remained such a sensitive one that we didn’t talk about it much until Lindsay was already walking down the road towards adoption.
